The Way to Make a Straightforward Chocolate Cake

by Yves Casson

The other night, I had a dream that I was taking a walk through the aisles of my supermarket - the baking aisles, to be specific, and I was choosing the most decadent cake ingredients: cherries, dried berries, caramel frosting, white chocolate flakes and everything in between. That's what happens when you fall asleep during cake baking shows, I presume. So anyway, I awakened and it was my day off so I thought, "Why not make this dream come true?" Well, the first issue is that I'm a man who does not know his way round the kitchen at all when it comes to baking; but, rather than leave my crushed dreams laying there on the floor, I chose to meet them half-way and see whether I could find a plain chocolate cake recipe. That sounds simple enough, doesn't it?

A mate of mine suggested I try out the chocolate cake recipe that I am about to share with you. She told me it was so simple that even I could pull it off - thanks, very inspiring. In any case, I already had all the ingredients for this plain chocolate cake recipe. If a bachelor has this stuff, then chances are you do too.

Ingredients for this chocolate cake recipe:

- 2 cups of granulated sugar

- 3 cups of all-purpose flour

- One (1) tsp. of salt

- 1/3 cup of cocoa powder

- 2 tsp of baking powder

- 1 tsp of liquid vanilla

- 2 tbsp of vinegar

- 3/4 cup of vegetable oil

- 2 cups of cold water

Preparation instructions:

1. First, preheat your oven to 350F.

2. Mix the dry ingredients together (sugar, flour, salt, cocoa powder and baking powder).

3. Mix the wet ingredients together in a separate bowl.

4. Mix together the contents of each bowl.

5. Pour this blend into a baking pan.

6. Bake for 40 minutes in the preheated oven.

The best part of this recipe was how fast and simple the preparation was. I had envisaged more of a kitchen catastrophe by the end....Apocalypse Kitchen Now!

Fortunately the kitchen was spotless and the cake was utterly mouth-watering. Plus, I had plenty leftover for when guests pop in.

Another trick I've learnt is that the cake can be re-heated in the microwave for twenty to thirty seconds, dependent on the rating of the microwave. Once re-heated, you can drop a dollop of either cream or ice cream and enjoy.

There you have it! A delightful, old fashioned recipe that truly is a 'piece of cake' to make!
